| Air-Seeders Get a Yetter Partner in the Fight Against Sidewall Compaction |
|
Yetter Manufacturing Company now offers a tool to help producers using air seeders deal with the challenging high-moisture soil conditions brought on by wet weather. The company’s popular Spike Closing Wheel is now available in an air-seeder compatible model.
The Spike Closing Wheel is the tool to counteract the compaction and trench-closing problems that result when growers are forced to plant into wet soil. Yetter Manufacturing’s newest model mounts directly to the closing arm of the air seeder. |
“Air-seeders are popular options for no-till producers, and many are looking for solutions to these challenging planting conditions,” said Andy Thompson, Yetter Manufacturing Company territory manager. “Now the Spike Closing Wheel—a proven performer—is an option.”
Smeared sidewalls or open seed slots contribute to poor germination, uneven emergence, and lower yields. The Yetter Spike Closing Wheels can be added to single-disc openers to break up the smeared soil and slot, ensuring consistent closing of the seed trench and good seed-to-soil contact. This facilitates robust root development and sets the foundation for higher yields.
The solid-cast, 15-inch wheels have teeth mounted to operate along the side of the seed trench. “The finger design of the wheel sheds damp soil to prevent soil build-up in wet conditions,” added Thompson.
The Spike Closing Wheel for air seeders can also perform light tillage. As each tooth enters the soil, the narrow, diamond-shaped tip creates a wedging action, which in turn lifts and crumbles the soil as the spike exits it. The row-area warms and dries more quickly and seed emergence is improved.
Each wheel features a wide-crowned depth band for superior depth control, preventing the spikes from intersecting the seed trench. Down pressure on the Spike Closing Wheel can be reduced and the tool will still close the seed trench, even in the most severe conditions. |
